Augusto Boal, 1931 - 2009
This past Saturday, Augusto Boal passed away. This is a sad moment for all who work within the realm of Theatre of the Oppressed. He was a pioneer, an artist, an activist, a politician and a compassionate man whose accomplishments are truly amazing. As a Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner I have great hope for the future. Boal's work will live on in all of those practicing to change the world through activism and art with company's such as All Nations Theatre. I believe there is a responsibility to approach this task with humility, passion, integrity, and creativity. And as we shape Boal's work to fit our practice and the needs of the communities we work with, let's be open to the possibilities, the inventiveness of our own creativity, while staying true to the underlying philosophy of the work as it was originally intended. The willingness to take risks with the work will truly honour his legacy. And as we venture forth on our journey's, where we will make mistakes, where we will triumph, we shall never forget Boal.

Teenzone!
Calgary Teenzone is a great initiative aiming to provide quality after school opportunities for youth in the Falconridge area. All Nations Theatre, in partnership with the Cerebral Palsy Association in Alberta, have been running a program as part of Teenzone, called the "Playmakers Project". I am the lucky one facilitating the project, which runs every Tuesday at Rotary Challenger Park. I have a steady group of 8 youth from Bishop McNally high school and the Cerebral Palsy Association who have been committed to the project since day one (way back in October). Through improvisation and Theatre of the Oppressed related activities, the group has decided to build a short play around the theme of "being who you are". We are still in the development stages, but the process certainly is an exciting one! The group is tentatively planning on performing during "Youth Week" (last week of April). I will keep you posted on that possibility!
Here is the website for Teenzone. There are lots of great activities...check it out!

PTO 2009
There is a most amazing conference held every year (I have not gone yet, although I have heard great things) - Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed International Conference. I am heading down there this year to do a 3 day Legislative Theatre workshop with Augusto Boal. I encourage any one who has an interest in such work to consider this conference at some point in their careers. I truly believe it is important for practitioners to meet, learn from each other and make international connections. I have met a number of people through workshops and conferences who live all around the world, and their knowledge and support is immeasurable.

A new blog!
Hi everyone!
Welcome to ANT's new blogspot. As we are attempting to roll into the 21st century (slowly but surely) we are designing a new website, planning video documenting possibilities, networking ...and this: our blog!
This space will be updated by me (Lindsay Ruth, Program Coordinator/Joker) with the possibility of contributions from other staff and members of the organization as well. I hope that people will visit this site to check up on what's new with the company and recent thoughts and ideas that arise from the work we are doing. I will also be providing links to resources and stories that might be of interest to readers.
So, please check it out regularly and feedback is always good!
